Water Force
Submitted by The Tower Fox
The elevated steel multi-column water tower was originally constructed in 1944 during World War II. It was built to support the expanding administrative offices, housing, and utility infrastructure on the east side of what was then known as Andrews Field (later Andrews Air Force Base).
For over six decades, the iconic tower proudly sported the standalone U.S. Air Force logo. However, following the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) recommendations, Andrews Air Force Base merged with Naval Air Facility Washington. When the installation officially transitioned into Joint Base Andrews in October 2009, the tower was repainted to add the U.S. Navy insignia, transforming it into a permanent visual symbol of inter-service unity.
The tower is owned by Prince George’s County and operated by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). It underwent a massive, multi-month restoration effort to update its internal piping and infrastructure while completely refreshing its signature military murals.
Map shows the tower’s location.
